Class description:
The best way to become a good writer is to spend time with some dead ones. In other words, good writers READ! This class will be built around a healthy handful of classic short stories, most of whose authors have already left this earthly realm, but whose printed words nonetheless live on. From Holmes to Poe to Bradbury to O’Henry and more, we will enjoy an excellent, thoughtful, and entertaining short story every week, and will come away each time with an extra rich understanding of literary elements. Assignments will seek to analyze and mimic these masters, whose specialties include descriptive writing, figures of speech (metaphors, similes, personification), foreshadowing, clever twists, irony, and more. In their writing, students will also be encouraged to add all of the other literary devices that they have already learned.
