Innovation Workshop - PASADENA: Feb/Apr (Fri) Grades 7-12th
Summary: “Imagination allows us to envision alternative possibilities, and creativity equips us with the tools to bring them into existence. Imagination and creativity are at the heart of all uniquely human achievements, and those achievements have been dazzling.” -Ken Robinson.
What Is Innovation?
Everything we see that is not from the natural world has been invented and made. Modern civilization has been shaped by human creativity and ingenuity. Our ancestors created simple tools two hundred thousand years ago, and in very recent times we have created technologies that have changed the world. Everything from the lightbulb, to the iPhone has been invented.
Why A Workshop?
We need to teach innovation skills to younger generations to help ignite new ideas, and seek positive change in the world around us. We also need to understand our relationship to technology, and how it can be used to help humanity. Invention not only encompasses advances in technology, scientific discovery, and the products we want to create - but also includes positive social innovation and non-profit initiatives.
During this weekly Workshop we will discuss inventors and breakthroughs that have shaped the modern world. We will also discuss the effects of technology on society, and how technology can be used for social good. Students will also work on their own projects during the Workshop experiencing the process of invention using their own creativity, imagination, and ingenuity. Innovator Workbooks will be provided to each Student which can be used as homeschool work samples. Students will learn crucial tools of innovation and strengthen ideas through discussion, evaluation, and team collaboration. We will use creative exercises and imagination games to help us create and innovate. We will also use real-world examples of innovation to deepen Students' understanding. Students can ask for specific topics or areas of interest to be included in the weekly Workshops.
The Workshop is being facilitated by Ian H. an inventor, entrepreneur, and founder of an Innovation Lab based in Pasadena. We also plan to have monthly Q&A Sessions from innovators who are experts in Artificial Intelligence, Climate Science, Software Engineering, and Space Exploration. We will use whiteboards, paper, and online tools. Students can also use laptops or tablets - but they are not essential.
